TRIBUTE TO ISAAC DUROJAIYE aka Otunba Gadaffi C.E.O (DMT)

Tribute to Otunba Gadaffi by Pro Kunle Hamiltom

Nigeria has lost a rare gem of social entrepreneurship - Isaac Durojaiye (Otunba Gadaffi) SAN - Senior Agbepo of Nigeria. DMT has lost its Founder and Vice Chairman. I have lost a friend, client and brother. Shaddaiville has lost a Fellow and Choir Patron. May his soul rest in perfect peace in Jesus name. Amen.

As tall as the man was at 7ft plus, he would bend double to respect you and bend over backwards to help you, once he was convinced you are willing to also help yourself. Isaac Durojaiye aka ‘Otunba Gadaffi’ died an accomplished man. But whether he was also fulfilled before his death is another matter.
He would have turned 50 on April 3, 2012 but didn’t. Before he died in a private Lagos hospital late Tuesday afternoon, March 20, 2012 I suspect it was me he granted his last interview.

This tribute is to a wonderful friend and client; a loyal and committed supporter of my charity work, and a co-driver of many youth empowerment drives. This man’s outstanding social entrepreneurship should not die.
Less than 18 hours after his death, I got a call from Dr. Ogunbiyi, Chairman, Dignified Mobile Toilets (DMT) Durojaiye’s only other boss after late Chief MKO Abiola, whom late Durojaiye served as head of security and personal bodyguard. His words were: “Otunba Gadaffi’s outstanding achievements in the DMT Group will continue to flourish. We will make sure of that.” Amen.

Gadaffi, as I love to call him, was driven by a passion to succeed, but not for himself alone. He wanted to help so many Nigerians step out of poverty. There was nothing flashy about him except his decision to make corporate the business of evacuating fecal waste, which before he came on the scene was handled by nocturnal bucket carriers. He painted all kinds of comic slogans on his trucks like “shit business is serious business” and “shit money never smells.” He beat tough times. Licked death thrice, yet doled our humour in bowls.

Early in December, four years ago, I had just stepped out of the shower in a flat in Bermondsey, London when I felt a compulsion to call Gadaffi. I am no soothsayer, just a gifted seer. Three things I foretold him on phone; that the Federal Government under late Umaru Yar’adua would send missives to him to assess him for an appointment or so, international partners would seek to do new business with him, and that unless we prayed together for seven weeks, he was going to die!
Till he breathed his last, he called me ‘Oluso’ (my shepherd). This is a side of me that most people outside of the gospel enterprise never knew. Gadaffi confirmed that the FG sent two missives to him just the day before; that three international firms were seeking partnership with him on biogas production from fecal waste; and that he was highly hooked on medication (52 tablets a day, he admitted).
For seven weeks, we prayed together in faith. It was mostly done on telephone. He called me from five different countries spread across three continents for our prayers. In 90 days, he was weaned off 52 tablets. Within the year, “I am strong again, Oluso” he told me.

Today, my friend is dead. But in those four years, he expanded his business beyond measure. He was married and had children. There is an exceptional male staff he took as an adopted son in business and had such huge plans for next to the new boss of DMT. I can only hope such plans, including his latest N80 million investment in evacuation trucks and expansion measures are firmly established by DMT management.
A Fellow of Shaddaiville Ministries and Patron of the choir, Shaddai Echoes, Gadaffi’s last business interview with me was about how DMT alleviates poverty especially in slum areas of Lagos State.

Debbie : Your philosophy?

Sperie : Its easier to do things right than to explain why they were done wrong..

Debbie : Thank you Franklyn for sharing your time with me.

Sperie : Thank you very much..God bless

MADE IN AFRICA (CAN 2012)

Away from the European football razzmatazz, from the top leagues in Europe and from the never- ending transfer market.  In-step the African Cup of Nations, the biggest football competition on the continent, it brings African stars scattered all over Europe under one umbrella. This year, it is no exception, the stars have arrived, the adrenaline is pumping and we can wait for the rumble to kick-start. Today @Gingerstiff highlights 4things about the Nation’s cup.

-SENEGAL STRIKE FORCE:Senegal have slipped on the ladder of greatness, since their remarkable debut at the 2002 World cup. They went back to the drawing board, mapped out strategies and have a proven squad now that can challenge for major honors. Senegal have one of the most lethal strike forces in African football not just on continental soil but proven goal scorers in European Football. A frontline that packages Moussa Sow, PapisCisse, Demba Ba, Niang should send shivers down the spine of any defender. In 2010-2011 season Cisse scored (31), Sow (31), Dembaba (28) goals, that is a staggering 90goals in the bag, now that’s scary! Definitelyoneof the clear favorite to claim the coveted prize, Senegal will depend on the effective strikers to hit top gear from day 1. Newly recruited Newcastle striker Cisse will be eager to show his new suitors, how well they spent on him. There are still the reliable Niang, the former Marseille striker might be playing his last competition alongside Henri Camara, and so to sign off with the Nations Cup medal will be perfect

-IVORIAN EGO: unarguably the most talented squad on the continent, their only weakness on paper seems to be between the sticks. This generation of players ply their trade for the top guns in European football …. Drogba andKalou (CHELSEA), Gervinho (ARSENAL), the Toure brothers (MANCHESTER CITY), Tiote (NEWSCASTLE), Boka (STUTTGART), Eboue (GALATASARY) e.t.c. Many wonder why such a talented generation of players have failed to conquer the continent, the quality is there, the talent is there, the cohesion is there but their major problem is their EGO. They underestimate their opponent, they believe their class and quality will win scare away opponent. I was listening to Mr. Gaye on Soccer Africa; he said “our boys will be on the phone till 3:00am talking to girls, claiming to be their sisters. When you ask them about their opponent, they give u that “they can’t beat us look”. They have proven players at the highest level, if they can outgrow their Ego and take every game seriously; they might just be doing themselves and their Nation a huge favor. I doubt that.

-UPSET: My biggest obsession in football, I love to see the so called “smaller teams” destabilize the flow of the competition. The Euphoria it brings to the competition is unimaginable; the tale of 90minutes will be heard by many generations unborn. I don’t need to hype Burkina Faso, I will let them do the talking on the field. The team is not littered with stars like the Ivory Coast, Senegal or Ghana but they have built a compact team hard to break down. Their main threat lies on wing play, with former Hamburg wing wizard Jonathan Pitroipa and Alain Traore. Pitroipa has been in superb form for Rennes this season, very tricky customer, comfortable on both flanks and very pacy, Traore has also been in red-hot form for Auxerre with 7goals, 2 assists in 17 games. The former Manchester United trialist alongside Pitroipa will carry the hope of a Nation on their shoulders. In a group with Angola and Ivory Coast, should be very interesting. Another team I believe will do very well is Bostwana and Mali, fingers crossed

-LEVEL OF COMPETITION:Every team at this competition qualified through pain and tedious hardwork, dedication and 100% level of commitment, they deserve to be there. I fear for the class between teams, with the likes of Cameroun, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa et al out of this year’s competition the quality level might have gone down drastically. Imagine a competition without Samuel Eto’o, Alex Song, MIkel Obi, Goma, Abdutrika the list is endless, its either the level of competition in Africa has gone up or the Big teams just believed they could stroll over the lesser teams. From Monetary part of the competition, I also fear for Endorsement, the population of people that would have love to see their favorite stars, the viewers will definitely not be the same.

INDISCRIMINATE USE OF DRUGS AND SELF MEDICATION

As I sit to write this important topic, I can’t help but wonder how many lives must have been lost due to the indiscriminate use of drugs.  According to the world health organization (WHO). ’DRUG’, can be defined as any substance or product that is given to modify or explore pathological conditions and physiological state for the benefit of man.’ INDISCRIMINATE’ according to Longman Dictionary is defined as that which is “done without considering who will be affected or harm”. In a lay man's language, the inappropriate use of a drug without proper prescription by a medical practitioner (usually a pharmacist) is termed SELF MEDICATION. However, most people that are found or fond of this habit consider it “FREEDOM”. Freedom which is “being able to do what you want without being a prisoner and without being under another person's control “But, when it involves the use of drugs or medication I bet to differ.

Most people blame it on ignorance, some carelessness while to a larger extent, even amongst elites, its FIRST AID……… “I laugh” but pardon my amusement. What is unknown to this people is that indulging in such an act is akin to DRUG ABUSE; which can be defined as a disorder that is characterized by a destructive pattern of using a substance that leads to significant problems or distress. A lot of people take different kinds of drug without prescription based on the fact that they suffer from the same condition (Health issues) as their friends, but, little do they know that we all have different body compositions, what Mr A would take to get better might not do well with Mr B. Self-medication is often seen as gaining personal independence from established medicine. There are different drugs categorized into different classes with different levels of dependence, But, whatever  the case might be, once a drug is used for what it’s not meant for, its abused. A drug like paracetamol (Acetaminophen) to some people can cure anything they suffer from and that's just because it’s readily available (over the counter drugs (OTC).

The stages of indiscriminate use of drugs develops gradually from,
- Tolerance to
- Dependence and finally into
- Addiction
Tolerance in medical terms can be defined as a stage whereby therapeutic efficacy is no longer derived from the normal dose(s) of a drug which leads to Dependence and occurs once the abused drug is no longer available, signs of withdrawal become apparent , a combination of such signs, referred to as the “Withdrawal symptoms” , defines DEPENDENCE. Addiction also known as psychological dependence, which consists of compulsive, relapsing drug use despite negative consequences.
Apart from the Non-psychoactive drugs being abused, the most commonly abused drugs in the world today are the PSCHOACTIVE drugs and they include. Alcohol, Amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, cannabis and so much more; Most of these drugs are taken for the effects that they give, which are:

- Ecstasy
- Mood elevation
- Euphoric feeling
- Performance enhancement, to mention a few.
It has been proven by researchers that drug abuse affects about 7% of the population at some point in their lives. Today, virtually any substance whose ingestion can result in an euphoric feeling can be abused.

CAUSES OF DRUG ABUSE
1. Ignorance
2. Hard times (euphoric feeling): to get pass it
3. Peer pressure amongst Youth
4. Biological, Social and environmental factors
There are different ways of curtailing this act, they include
- Effective deal with peer pressure
- Being knowledgeable (following prescriptions and asking questions)
- Organizing talks and other campaign programs
- Provision of rehabilitation centres
With proper monitoring and care this act can be stopped and our health, better protected.

WASTED TEAM OF THE SEASON

The transfer window is one of the most anticipated times of the season, the razzmatazz, the rumors (true or false), the tension, all these helps to kick-start the league proper. The transfer fee a player commands, his ability, his form chart and good sportsmanship doesn’t guarantee him a successful spell at his new club. The fans expectation might never be met, this can contribute to the premature end to a blistering career that might have just started or put the club into the red figures. A player might arrive on a free; the whole world feels it should be the bargain of the season. Injury and inconsistency at the top level can also drag a player’s career away from lime light. Today, ADESINA OLUWATOSIN looks at eleven players that are as good as forgotten in different positions in the Barclays premier league.

GOMES (SPURS) GOALKEPPER: Few goalkeepers in the world can make DAVID JAMES still look world class, Gomes is one of them. The Brazilian had a blinder at PSV and was in the Brazilian squad, very athletic an a good shot stopper, all these attribute tempted Spurs to shell out 10m for the Brazilian. Sometimes I wonder why he chose goalkeeping as a profession; his errors are just unimaginable, a catalogue full of blunders. Harry couldn’t defend the Brazilian anymore, instep 40year-old BRAD FREIDEL, the Brazilian is now down the pecking order behind CUDUCCINI. Another great contender for this spot is Arsenal’s MANUEL ALMUNIA, from assistant captain, first choice between the sticks to fourth choice behind MANNONE? Then you must be doing something wrong.

CORLUKA (SPURS) RIGHT BACK: So many contenders for this spot, HABIB BEYE of ASTON VILLA, PAOLO FERRIERA of CHELSEA, The Croatian takes the crown. Once a regular at Manchester city, Vedran moved to Spurs, he instantly became the first choice right back, bursting down the right wing. Well, that is history now, Hutton came in sent him to the bench. The emergence of Kyle Walker finally condemns Corluka. He can dwell on the fact he had a serious injury, but we have seen players recover from horrific injury n continue where they left.I can’t recall the last time I saw HABIB BEYE on the field. The only reason he didn’t win this spot is the age difference. The Senegalese moved to Aston Villa following Newcastle’s relegation.
JONATHAN WOODGATE (STOKES CITY) CENTER BACK: Yes he is injury prone, yes he is talented. I believe the English premier league standard is more than Jonathan can cope with. The pace, the level of endurance, zeal and commitment has gone up by 100 %. However, he boasts a very good C.V, having played for Real Madrid, Tottenham and Newcastle. The former England international is only a squad player at stokes, mainly due to the impressive partnership of Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth.  Runner up to this position has to be Sebastian Squlacchi, the former Sevilla defender always takes a step back every day. The move to Arsenal automatically killed his career, regular for France and Sevilla, now he is behind every defender at Arsenal and not even close to the national team. He lacks pace, concentration and positioning, talk about aerial prowess don’t even get me started

ALEX (CHELSEA) CENTER BACK:Just like Gomez, the Brazilian was superb for PSV.. He wrecked Arsenal champions league aspiration at the Emirates forcing a 1-1 draw. He moved to Chelsea, ready to solidify the back four. Injury reduced his playing time; the Brazilian has found life hard in London, ultimately leading to him handing in a transfer request. One time brazil-international, Alex cannot boast of 10 games a season. Runner up to this position has to be Bassong. The Frenchman left Newcastle after the Toons relegated and joined spurs. Many thought it would eventually lead to him establish himself as a regular in the National team, how wrong! He has dropped down the pecking order.
FABIO AURELIO (LIVERPOOL) LEFT BACK:Another Brazilian that has over stayed his stay in the premiership. Liverpool released him only for the kops to hand him another contract. He is technically balanced, deadly from set-piece n thunderous shot power, despite oozing genius all over his ability to stay fit is a different ball game. Wayne Bridge should have won this post easily but I think Aurelio is a better player. Wayne’s career keeps going down, what Manchester City saw in him still baffles me. He was sent on loan to West ham couldn’t spark his career to life. Now surplus to requirement at Manchester City, wherever he moves to next, and one thing is for sure, he won’t in prove their squad.

Two Tales in One City

Football as they say is played with 11 men not names. Who on earth would have thoughtlast season finalist,Manchester United and sugar daddy-pampered city rivals Manchester City would end their  quest in the champions league this season without crossing the first hurdle. The UEFA champions’ league is by miles the greatest football competition in the world. The money spinning, lucrative competition brings the best players, under one football umbrella for blissful viewing for millions of fans worldwide. This season is no exception, clubs invest over-the hill to either qualify for the competition or bring home the decorated trophy.
The thing I love the most about the competition is the un-ending upsets. Barcelona’s’ lost at home to Rubin Kazan will forever be a stand out, Inter’s defeat to Trazanspor at the San Siro …. The list is endless. This year didn’t fail to live up to expectation. ADESINA OLUWATOSIN looked at 2 of the biggest clubs that failed to makeit out of the group stage; there are clubs like Porto, Ajax, Valencia and Shakthar that flattered to deceive on the biggest stage in club football. But, am gunning for just 2.

MANCHESTER UNITED
Words cant describe how furious Sir Alex Ferguson must be rightnow, for him to label the Europa League as an “accident” says it all. When the draw was made, I said to my friend United should qualify with 2 games to go taking into consideration the quality of players, the reputation of the club and the lowly rated teams that completes the group (Benfica, Basel, OtelulGalati ). On paper that should be 15points in the bag, but football is played on the pitch not paper. United started the group with an away game to Benfica, an unconvincing draw thanks largely to some heroic goal keeping from Danish goalie saved their blushes. The writing was on the wall, the link up play was totally absent, the strikers had to drop deep to take a bite of the cherry. Fergie of all managers should realize you cant play at the top level with no creative midfielder, the Carrick-Anderson-Fletcher won’t give u 80% pass accuracy neither will they give you 4 assists in 6 games.  Basel’s visit to Old Trafford was one the faithful would love 2 forget quickly, leading 2-0 HT, cruising home… disaster struck! Football indeed is a game of two halves, 3 second half goals from the FREIs’ sent United to the Edge, thanks to Ashley Young’s stoppage time equalizer. United’s could only manage wins against the group whipping boys Otelul Galati, followed up with a 2-2 draw at home to Benfica  ultimately taking the last qualification ticket to the wire against Basel in Switzerland.Adraw would send United through, Basel didn’t read the script. Fastest out of the blocks, as they say “the rest is history “Manchester United failed to qualify from the easiest group and dropped to the “accidental” Europa League

WHAT HAPPENED? : Lack of a top class creative midfielder. The link play was nowhere near present; Rooney had to do the creative job and his striking job, too much responsibility.  Too many  new players  inexperienced but talented youngsters, DE GEA, PHIL JONES, CHRIS SMALLING, ASHLEY YOUNG et al
Another big gun out of the champions’ league is Manchester city. Galaxy stars can grant u the fearsome reputation on the domestic stage not the champions’ league; it’s a different ball game. Tactically, formation, approach to every game is always different. Another homework city failed in their champions league is Calculation, leading 2-0 against Bayern why celebrate? It always going to be a tough group wit City drawn against Napoli, and Villareal.

Manchester city started their campaign with a draw to Napoli followed up with a defeat in Germany to Bayern Munich; the double header against Villareal was as expected maximum 6 points. The must win game against Napoli was the turning point, two brilliant goals from Uruguayan goal predator Cavanni forced Manchester’s destiny out of their hands. It was all going swimmingly well for City, not only were they winning against 5-time European Champion, Napoli were still not winning and city rival Manchester United were on the losing side. All it took, though, was the flap of a butterfly’s wing on the other of the side of the continent to turn City’s champagne moment into a raging hangover. Rarely can beating Bayern Munich one of the juggernauts of European football taste so sour
The champions’ league group stages have in recent times felt like a slow march towards inevitability. The seeded teams have been afforded the opportunity to field their second string side from as early as match day four and it’s all too rare in occurrence that , match day six is an event anticipated with eagerness

So, thank you Valbuena, Berezutskiy, Frei and others for making the UEFA champions’ league group stage worth watching all the way to the bitter-sweet conclusion
